A Boy, His Wagon and the Infant

Mathew was most thrilled on Christmas.  Right there, under the tree, was a wagon – a wonderful Radio Flyer Red Wagon!  The toy he had been wanting most of all.  The toy that he had been mentioning in his bedtime prayers for weeks.  Every day since Thanksgiving he had even walked around his block to the little church and made a special promise along with his request.

That evening he remembered to add something extra to his prayers:  "Thank you for all the wonder presents.  I'm sorry I could not have kept my promise today but Mommy and Daddy took me to Grandma and Grandpa's.  And thanks for the extra presents You left for me with them also."

The next day was a beautiful day.  Daddy went off to work and Mommy allowed him to go out with her usual admonition: "Do not cross the street."  He knew that meant not even to step over the curb, even in a driveway.  He could not sit right several times because he disobeyed that rule.  But Billy's house was on his block and they could play together.  As he walked down the sidewalk he was happy pulling his new wonderful Radio Flyer Red Wagon.

Matty first went to the church.  Right there on the lawn was the créche.  Just as he had stopped there to pray and promise since Thanksgiving, he did so this day but with a difference.  This time he just said "Thanks".  Then he put the Infant into his wagon and started to pull it back to the street.

Father O'Malley stopped him.  He put his big hand over Matty's and pulled Matty, the wagon and the Infant back to the créche.  After returning the Infant to the manger in place, he sat on the church steps and told Matty that he must never do such a thing again.  To make sure his words were not forgotten, he opened Matty's belt and jeans and pulled down them down.  He pulled down Matty's Incredible Boy underpants and took him over his lap.  And then he spanked him.  Father O'Malley was a big man and he spanked hard.  Matty was a little boy and quickly got a very red bottom and was crying.© YLeeCoyote

The boy stayed there a while until he stopped crying.  Then he spoke to the Infant once again.  "I'm sorry, Father said You're not allowed to play."  He stood there, sadly awhile deciding what to do and then went inside to the confessional.

He waited quietly as he had been taught and soon he was asked why he was there.  "Father, I made a promise and I can't keep it."

"That's not good, my son.  What was your promise?"

"I promised Little Jesus that if He brought me a red wagon for Christmas that I would take him for a ride around the block in it.  But He has been a naughty boy and is not allowed to go out to play."

Back in 2007 I though up the idea of a little boy doing his best to fulfill his promise and getting unjustly spanked by a jump-to-conclusion authority figure.  I have recently learnt that the taking of the Infant really happened.  It was dramatized on the series “Dragnet”.  The first time on radio as “The Big Little Jesus” originally broadcast December 22, 1953 (#227).  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gCcGnPXZ2w  That was redone as “The Christmas Story”  broadcast December 21, 1967 (S2/E15) on TV.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNrFqUK5pWg  In this case happily the priest found out the facts and did not abuse the innocent real boy who appears after twenty-four minutes.  [Added January, 2022]
